From 9to5Toys.com:

After it started offering a selection of refurbished 5th generation iPod touch through the Apple online store earlier this month, Apple today began selling the refurbished 16GB, 7th generation iPod nano in various colors for $129. That’s $20 or 13% off retail, but we’ve seen these refurbished units go for as low as $119 on 9to5Toys.

Apple today also began selling the refurbished iPad 2 and iPad 3 at even lower prices than before with the 16GB iPad 2 with WiFi + 3G now starting at $349 (roughly $180 off retail). Apple has also further discounted its refurbished iPad 3 with WiFi and cellular to a starting price of $409 ($170 off retail). That provides consumers with an additional $50 off its old refurbished prices and matches the best price we’ve seen on 9to5Toys.

Redesigned Backlighting Could Be Behind iPad 5′s New Thinner, Lighter Design

Apple could introduce a redesigned backlighting system to the fifth-generation iPad to help make the device thinner and lighter, according to NDP DisplaySearch. The Cupertino company will have to make significant changes if it is to bring the iPad mini’s sleek and slim form factor to its bigger brother, and this is one of the areas in which it could reduce bulk.

“It’s likely that part of the thinner/lighter design will be reducing the size of the LED backlight, partly by making the display more efficient and partly by using more efficient LEDs,” said NDP analyst Paul Semenza. ”The other significant change that we feel is likely is a shift to a film-based touch sensor.”

The 9.7-inch iPad has looked exactly the same since the iPad 2 was launched way back in 2011. However, recent rumors have claimed Apple will rollout a new design for the fifth-generation device — expected later this year — that’ll be inspired by the iPad mini.

In addition to being significantly thinner and lighter, the iPad is also expected to adopt the same narrow form factor, thanks to thinner bezels either side of its display. It’s unclear at this point, however, whether the display technology itself will change in order to accommodate the thinner frame.

“It is not yet clear if there will be a big change to the display — such as using IGZO,” Semenza added.

Sharp’s IGZO displays are currently used in small consumer electronics sold in Japan, but they’ve been rumored to be making their way into Apple devices for the past few years. The advantage they have over LCD displays is that they’re thinner and they consumer less power, while still providing comparable brightness and image quality.

It’s thought the reason why Apple still hasn’t adopted IGZO technology is that Sharp simply cannot product enough to meet the demands of Apple’s fast-selling iOS devices. As soon as that changes, it’s possible we’ll see IGZO displays in at least the iPhone, the iPad, and the iPod touch.

Live from IFA: Hands on with LifeProof’s nüüd waterproof iPad case

LifeProof already made a splash with its water, dirt, snow, and shock-proof cases for iPhone 4 and 4S. Today at the ShowStoppers IFA event in Berlin, we were able to get our hands on LifeProof’s latest creation: an iPad version of the popular Nüüd case. If you are unfamiliar, the Nüüd cases feature no screen protection (although there is now an optional display cover that doubles as a stand), but instead protects your iPad from the elements by creating a seal around the perimeter of the display. The case is currently available for iPad 2 and 3 through the LifeProof website and bundled with the screen protector/stand for €127.53 ($160). Head past the break for another video demo of the Nüüd case ‘skinny dipping’ (being submerged in water).

From 9to5Toys.com:

Too cheap to buy Apple’s $70 Bluetooth keyboard? It’s O.K. you cheap bastard, we have you covered.

Right now, a “white Bluetooth wireless keyboard,” which connects to second-generation and third-generation iPad and iPhone 4S (or any Bluetooth device), is available on eBay for $16.99. The deal features free standard shipping with delivery on or before Aug. 25. It looks almost exactly like an Apple keyboard (Samsung involvement?), but we wouldn’t bet it is aluminum. With that said, the seller has a 99.6-percent positive rating from 116,000 customers.
